Principal Officers’ jewels
The three Principal Officers of the lodge are the Master and his two Wardens. These three Officers wear badges of office in the shape of key stonemasons’ tools that each bear key symbolic significance to Freemasons. These three tools are known as the “movable jewels” of a Lodge for two reasons – they move with their owners around the Lodge during the ceremonies, and are passed on by the Office holder to his successor at each annual Installation meeting.

The Square is the badge of the Master of the Lodge. To Freemasons, the Square represents Morality and the need to regulate one’s behaviour.

The Level is the badge of the Senior Warden, the second ranked Officer in the lodge. To Freemasons, the Level represents Equality and is a reminder that all men are equal.

The Plumb Rule is the badge of the Junior Warden. Its vertical nature, to Freemasons, represents uprightness of life and actions.
